The specific objectives of the Institute are
To innovate,
develop and standardize epidemiological techniques and practices
To provide
epidemiological services to the central and state governments and other
agencies
To liason with
research institutes, field units and the central and state ministries of health
and family welfare in matters relating to epidemiology
To develop human
resource in the field of epidemiology through education and training. To
provide required training facilities in epidemiology for
medical and para-medical workers
To conduct and
support epidemiological studies for prioritization and health policy planning
in relation to control of diseases in line with national
health needs
To conduct and
support operational research and health systems research as relevant to the
specified health programmes from time-to-time
To refine and
develop epidemiological research methods. To develop epidemiological science
and tools for managerial and operational purposes. To test
and evolve newer strategies and interventions and facilitate
their transition from the laboratory to the field and conduct or provide
advice regarding alternative approaches
To serve as the
national centre of epidemiology informatics
To make available
consultancy services
To serve as the
hub of a network of epidemiological activities
