Objectives To provide on-line distance education in bioethics through distance learning
Description Following a Planning Grant award in 2002 and Training Grant award from 2004 onwards from the National Institutes of Health (NIH), USA, bioethics education in India rose stepwise from short term sensitization activity to long term training program of 4-5 weeks duration. In order to reach a more advanced course to a wider audience in a cost-effective manner, distance education was considered as an ideal step towards that goal. Therefore, following a MoU drawn between ICMR and IGNOU for joint initiatives in April 2007, the distance education program in Bioethics was announced as an online one in 2009. The reading materials were prepared by ICMR for the one year Diploma Program in Bioethics, which were uploaded by IGNOU. Some long term trainees had assisted in preparing of some units of this material. In 2011, the first batch of 42 nominees from various disciplines was enrolled. It has completed the course now. The list of the second batch of 50 selected candidates is ready to undertake the course. 120 videos produced in the earlier grant period were digitized for use as teaching material, of which some are uploaded by the School of Health sciences, IGNOU. These are being accessed all over the world through YouTube with some having more than 4000 hits within this one year period. A studio is being set-up to facilitate holding of virtual classroom for the Diploma program by NIE itself to sustain the efforts of ICMR in dissemination of Bioethics education. Efforts for the next step for Masters training are on.
Quarterly Reports (5-10 lines) The second batch for PG diploma course has been short-listed. On-line program on Research methods, Human subjects protection and Good Clinical Practice are being planned
