He obtained MBBS degree from Kurnool Medical College, Kurnool in 1972 and DPH from All India Institute of Hygiene and Public Health, Calcutta in 1981. He visited USA on fellowships to university of Michigan, University of Minnisota and John Hopkins University in 1983 and 1991.

He worked as a Medical Officer conducting survey education and treatment in Leprosy Control Unit at T. Narasipur. As a Research Officer and Senior Research Officer at the Tuberculosis Research Centre, Madras, he actively involved in monitoring field work to study the effect of BCG vaccine against Leprosy at Tiruvellore and involved in the controlled clinical trial in the chemotherapy of Micobacterial diseases. He actively involved in planning and organization of the studies of Leprosy vaccine trial after joining the CJIL Field Unit at Avadi. He is involved in prevaccine studies such as standardization of vaccinators, diagnosis of Leprosy, utility of Histopathalogy in confirmation of Leprosy and also classification of Leprosy, Immuno-epidemiological studies, major comparative Leprosy Vaccine Trial and Controlled Clinical Trials.

SCIENTIST 'F'

A statistician by profession, he held important positions during his career till now including those of Research Officer (UNFPA project) at the International Institute for Population Sciences (IIPS) (1980-82), Lecturer-cum-Research Officer at the Population Research Centre, Dept. of Statistics, Andhra University, Waltair (1983). He is a life member in many professional societies. He was honoured with Prof. R.N. Srivastava award for his best paper presentation at the 1995 annual conference Indian Society for Medical Statistics. He contributed chapters in three books. He has published more than 20 research articles in national and international journals.

His areas of interest include experimental design, statistical analysis, sample surveys, rapid assessment methods, monitoring and evaluation, methodological issues, consultancy, collaboration, teaching, training and guiding students for Ph.D in statistics.

SCIENTIST 'F'

He obtained MBBS degree from Govt. Medical College, Nagpur in 1988 and MD in Preventive and Social Medicine from the same college in 1992.

He was working as an epidemiologist at Regional Medical Research Centre (RMRC), Port Blair for over ten years and was involved in several research projects on diseases endemic in Andaman and Nicobar islands including leptospirosis, viral hepatitis, tuberculosis and lymphatic Filariasis. He was one of the leading members of the team involved in carrying out studies in the field of viral hepatitis among the tribes of these Islands. The results showed hepatitis B as an important public health problem of these tribes. Considering the significance of the findings and based on the recommendations of RMRC, Government of India has initiated universal immunization against hepatitis B among the population of Andaman & Nicobar Islands.

Currently he is serving as a faculty for two-year Master of Applied Epidemiology (MAE) - Field Epidemiology Training Programme (FETP).

Obtained M.Sc. degree in Applied Immunology from Brunel University, London, England, U.K in 1979. Thereafter completed the Master of Public Health (M.P.H.) degree in Epidemiology and Health Management from the University of Michigan School of Public Health, Ann Arbor, Michigan, USA, in 1983. Conferred Ph. D. degree from the Dept. of Population Studies Sri Venkateswara University, Tirupathi, Andra Pradesh, India in 1997.

Involved in Clinical, Laboratory and Field Epidemiological Research in U.K., U.S.A. and India. Joined Sri Ramachandra Medical College and Research Institute as Assistant Professor of Community Medicine and involved in: (a) teaching and training of undergraduate and postgraduate medical and paramedical students and (b) conduct of community based screening, health and medical camps. Joined the National Institute of Epidemiology as Asst. Director (Epid) in 2000. Involved in Training Activities for short term Field Epidemiology Training Programme. 2 years Master of Applied Epidemiology offered by NIE in collaboration with WHO, NICD and Sree Chitra Thirunal Institute for Science and Technology, Trivandrum, Kerala. Disease Surveillance and setting up of a database on the Epidemiological profile of India with reference to communicable disease is another major activity undertaken. Involved in setting up of surveillance system for dengue in Chennai city, India. Research projects undertaken on International studies related to reduction of Infant Mortality Rate in a selected district of Tamil Nadu and reduction of Cardio Vascular Disease risk factors among selected industrial cohort in Chennai city India.

He has a Ph. D in Statistics and a PG diploma in computer management. He has attended a graduate summer program in Epidemiology at the Johns Hopkins University, Baltimore, USA and a course on Management and Analysis of Statistical Data (MASD) conducted by the University of Reading, UK. He has also undergone a 3-month certificate course in applied nutrition at the National Institute of Nutrition, Hyderabad. He has completed his course requirements of 'Master of Applied Epidemiology' being offered by the National Centre for Epidemiology and Population health (NCEPH), Australian. National University, Australia.
He has more than 25 years experience in handling various research projects of the Council. The projects include, assessment of National Leprosy Control Programme, an epidemiologic investigation of helminth ova, health services research project on antenatal care, randomized intervention trial of Vitamin A supplementation, studies on maternal and child health indicators, nutritional anthropometry, sociological studies on HIV / AIDS, comparative trial of leprosy vaccines and methodological issues in field surveys. Presently he is a part of the team organizing Field Epidemiology Training Programme (FETP) in India.
He has provided statistical consultancy to several medical projects in the fields of dentistry, neurology, degenerative and infectious diseases. He is a faculty member of the Institute's training programmes.

Obtained a Masters degree in Applied Mathematics from the Bharadidasan University and Post-Graduate Diploma in Operations Research from Anna University. Started his career in ICMR as Research Officer in 1989. The job functions are mainly to provide assistance to various research projects in the area of data processing as follows:

1. Co-ordinating the data preparation, operation and maintenance of data bases on various ongoing     projects of this institute.
2. Attending to the operative functions that arise in the computer department.
3. Assitance to the staff in computer operations and software.

In addition to the above routine work, he has been involved in Geographical Information system (GIS) related activities. By using the GIS techniques some maps were printed out to study the geographical variation in general marital fertility rates among the villages of Villupuram Health Unit District. Leprosy Vaccine Trial area maps were created and these maps have been used to study the distribution of leprosy with respect to other variables. Extending this GIS technique to other studies/project is in progress.
He has been involved in the development of an epidemiological simulation model for leprosy transmission and control. Further modification to extend the model to some other diseases is in progress.

He has obtained his MBBS degree from Andhra University during the year 1974. He has been working in research field and treatment aspects in leprosy for the past 20 years. He is experienced in carrying out field research studies like Leprosy Vaccine Trial, Drug Trials etc. He is also experienced in carrying out the treatment component of leprosy patients as per the National Leprosy Eradication Programme, of Government of India. He is well versed in all the WHO regimens for the treatment of leprosy patients. He has imparted training to the field staff and medical officers on various aspects of conducting field research trials. He has experience in organizing, planning, and conducting all field based studies. He is also well versed in routine official administrative procedures.

She has obtained Ph.D. degree in Medical Social Work from Madras University in 1991 and D.Litt. in Social Sciences (Anthropology) from Ranchi University in 2000. Has gone as Post-Doctoral Fellow to Johns Hopkins University, School of Public Health and Hygiene, Baltimore for a training on Qualitative Research Methods and Community Based Control on Tropical Diseases in 1996 and to University of California, Los Angeles (UCLA) for a training on Epidemiology of HIV/AIDS and Behavioural aspects, in 2000. Has been working in the field of Medical Social Work for 23 years. Has experience in clinical trials and operational studies on Tuberculosis, leprosy and HIV / AIDS, in urban and rural settings.

Has conducted training on Theory & Methods in Counselling & Social Science Research. Is involved in planning & conduct of research studies on HIV / AIDS in different group of populations.

He earned his Master's degree in Statistics with Theoretical Computer Science in 1986 from the Loyola College, University of Madras, Chennai. He worked as a Research Associate from November 1987 to June 1991 in the Department of Biostatistics, Christian Medical College, Vellore. He has undergone two weeks training course on `the Principle and Practice of Epidemiology' at the Department of Community Health, CMC, Vellore. And then worked as a Research Officer in the Clinical Epidemiology Unit, King George's Medical College, Lucknow from July 1991 to June 1992. Since July 1992, he is in the ICMR. He was actively involved in the development of Simulation Model for Leprosy. He completely analysed the fifteen years follow up data of the Leprosy Prevention Trial (South India BCG Vaccine Trial). He was one of the member of the Leprosy Vaccine Trial Groups. At present, he is working on the lifetime risk of developing leprosy. He is developing interest on Mathematical Epidemiology.

Started his career as a Lecturer for Medical Laboratory Technology at Govt. Vocational Higher Secondary Education Department of Kerala State and School of Medical Education, Mahatma Gandhi University Kottayam, Kerala. He obtained M.Sc.MT (Microbiology) in 1999 and Ph.D (Medical Microbiology) in 2005 both from the Postgraduate Institute of Medical Education and Research (PGIMER), Chandigarh. He continued to work at PGIMER on the development of molecular diagnostic techniques for invasive fungal infections. Before joining as his present post at National Institute of Epidemiology, he worked as the State Laboratory Manager for the Bill & Melinda Gates Foundation (BMGF) funded Integrated Behavioural and Biological Assessment (IBBA) for Tamil Nadu. At National Institute of Epidemiology, Dr. David is the In-Charge of Laboratory Division. His broad area of interest is molecular epidemiology of infectious disease.  He underwent advanced training for molecular characterization and strain typing of Rota viruses at CDC, Atlanta, USA; special training on Bioinformatics, Bioterrorism, Bio-safety and Good Clinical Laboratory Practice. Currently he is actively involved in National Programmes of HIV Sentinel Surveillance conducted by NACO as a laboratory expert for the south Indian states.  He is a life member in many professional societies. His current projects include epidemiology of Rickettsial infections and their early diagnosis by molecular methods, Molecular typing of drug resistant Salmonella, Pseudomonas and other gram negative bacteria.

He earned his post-graduate and doctoral degrees in Microbiology from the University of Madras. His doctoral thesis was on opportunistic mycoses in HIV and Cancer patients with special reference to candidosis. He joined NIE as State Laboratory Manager in the Bill and Melinda Gates funded multi-centric project on Integrated behavioural and biological assessment of HIV. He has several publications in peer reviewed journals, book chapters and review articles in scientific newsletters and magazines. He joined his present position of Scientist C in 2008. He is a member of national and international microbiology societies and also serves as a scientific reviewer for peer reviewed microbiology journals. His current interests are HIV and STI epidemiology, Microbial drug resistance, opportunistic infections.

He obtained MBBS degree from Gandhi Medical College, Bhopal in 1998 and MD (Preventive & Social Medicine) from Banaras Hindu University, Varanasi in 2003. Currently a PhD candidate in Epidemiology at University of California, Los Angeles as a fellow in Fogarty AIDS International Training and Research Program since 2004.

He was working at NIE as Project Manager in the Bill and Melinda Gates Foundation multi-centric project on Integrated Behavioural and Biological Assessment of HIV since November 2007. Joined NIE as Scientist C (Medical/Epidemiology) in July 2008. Currently co-investigator for NIE-TUFTS University, Boston collaborative project on "Nutritional status of injection drug users in Chennai". Core faculty for two-year Master of Applied Epidemiology (MAE) - Field Epidemiology Training Programme (FETP) and Master of Public Health (MPH) programme.

His areas of interests include epidemiology methods, HIV epidemiology and infectious disease epidemiology.

He was working in WHO projects at NIE since Novermber, 2000. Joined NIE as Research Officer (Epidemiology) in 2003. Currently serving as one of the core faculty members for two-year Master of Applied Epidemiology (MAE) - Field Epidemiology Training Programme (FETP). He serves as faculty for several in house short-term training programmes. Involved in WHO sponsored chemotherapeutic trials for leprosy.

He holds MD Physician degree from Volgograd State Medical University, Russia. He also completed a one year CRRI in Madurai Medical College and worked in emergency departments in multispeciality hospitals in Madurai and Chennai.

He was working in WHO Measles Aerosol Project at NIE since May 2008. Currently he is working in Chronic Respiratory Diseases and Cardio-vascular Diseases Epidemiology.He also serves as a faculty member in School of Public Health


  Dr. J. YUVARAJ, MD.
SCIENTIST 'E'

He obtained MBBS degree from Univeristy of Madras, Chennai in 1990; MD in Preventive and Social Medicine from Rajiv Gandhi University of Health Sciences, Bangalore in 2003 and has been pursuing M.Phil. (Hospital and Health Systems Mgmt) from BITS, Pilani, Rajasthan. He was working as an epidemiologist at Vector Control Research Centre (VCRC), Puducherry for over seventeen years. He was involved in several research projects on vector borne diseases with reference to lymphatic filariasis. He was one of the leading members of the team involved in carrying out studies in the field of lymphatic filariasis in India. He has immensely contributed to the understanding of natural history; transmission control with mass drug administration, and morbidity control with limb hygiene in filarial lymphoedema. The results of the projects in which he has worked has influenced the policy of the government in implementing the filariasis elimination programme in India.He has recently joined as a faculty for two-year Master of Applied Epidemiology (MAE) - Field Epidemiology Training Programme (FETP) and Master of Public Health (MPH) -Health Services Development & Research Programme
