NIE Library has a rich collection of latest books, journals and other documents in various fields of epidemiology, biostatistics, public health, diseases, clinical trials, social science, demography, computers and other related areas. The collection is completely computerized and is in the process of being converted into a Digital Library. The library occupies an area of 3000 square feet and is well-equipped with all modern facilities. 

In addition to 200 in house scientists, NIE library caters to the needs of students and researchers from medical colleges, research institutes, government and non-governmental agencies and independent researchers in the city of Chennai. The library enjoys popularity among 30 ICMR institutes spread all over India, and is the hub for information needs of scholars of academic programmes conducted at NIE.


Library Management System : 

The collection and services of the library are fully computerized using the GLAS (Graphic Library Automation System) developed by Electronic online systems (EOS) International corporate, Carlsbad, California, USA. GLAS is integrated multi-user library management software that supports in-house operations of the library. The GLAS consists of modules on cataloguing, circulation, acquisition, serials, article indexing and Online Public Access Catalogue (OPAC). Over 6500 records have been created and are made accessible on a PC in the library. The main features of the database include search and retrieval facility, reservation facilities etc.

Books :  

Library is well stocked with total collection of 6500 books on epidemiology, biostatistics, public health, diseases, clinical trials, social science, demography, computers and other related fields. All the books are classified according to the Dewey Decimal Classification (DDC) scheme of Library Classification. Annually about 200 reference books are being added to the library collection.

Journals : 

Subscription are made for 71 National / International journals on epidemiology, biostatistics, demography, public health and clinical trials. The library also receives 15 periodicals on gratis. 

Thesis: 

Copies of thesis done by staff and scholars are organized in a separate reference section. Presently the library has 35 no. of thesis. 

CD-ROM: 

There is a good collection of CD-ROMs including Medline and National Union Catalgoue of Scientific Serials in India. Users can browse through the collection using the system arranged in the online zone of the library. 

Online Resources: 

The library provides access to online databases through proquest, JCCC@ICMR, J-Gate at Electronic Resource in Medicine (ERMED) which is an e-resource from the National Medical Library.

The Council has subscribed to five core bio-medical journals for all ICMR Institutes: 1. Lancet, 2. BMJ 3. NEJM 4. Nature 5. Science. This consortia allows password-protected access to these journals, including back volumes. These journals are available on-line ahead of the print versions.

We also utilize the networked information resources for providing recent and most comprehensive access to e-journals, e-books and e-reference resources to the faculty, students and staff under Intranet and Internet environments.

SERVICES OFFERED 

Routine services - Issue of books and journals and supply of reprints / photocopy of articles, as and when requested by other Institutes.

Inter-library loan facility – Utilizing inter-library loan facilities books and journals are borrowed from local British Council Library and American information Resource Centre. We share our resources and facilities with Tuberculosis Research Centre, Chennai, Dr. M.G.R Medical University, Tamilnadu Veterinary and Animal Science University and Y.R.G Care

Current awareness service – Details of newly acquired books, table of contents of latest journals, new additions in the local British Council Library, news paper cuttings on current health-related topics, and conference / workshop brochures are displayed for information.

Selective Dissemination of Information (SDI) – Specifically requested information is provided to the user through offline and online database search on demand.

Resource sharing – All ICMR librarians have formulated an ICMR librarians group e-mail for resource sharing. Journal articles available in any ICMR library can be obtained and delivered to scientists through this group mail service (email : icmrlibrarians@yahoo.groups.com).
